Find answers to common questions about ELP assessments, fleet compliance, and using the ELPReady platform.

Getting Started

How do I send an ELP assessment to a driver?

It takes about 30 seconds:

  • Log into your ELPReady dashboard
  • Go to the Drivers page and click "Add Driver"
  • Enter the driver's name and email address
  • Check "Send invitation immediately" and save

The driver receives an email with a secure link. They tap it, and the assessment begins immediately in their browser. No app download required.

Do drivers need to create an account?

No. Drivers don't need to create an account, download an app, or remember a password. They simply tap the link in the email and start the assessment. This is intentional—we designed ELPReady to work for drivers who may not be tech-savvy.

How long does an assessment take?

Most drivers complete the assessment in 2-5 minutes. The assessment includes two parts: a verbal interview section and a road sign identification section, mirroring the actual DOT roadside protocol.

Assessment Process

What does the assessment test?

ELPReady tests the same things a DOT inspector would test during a roadside ELP check:

  • Part 1: Verbal Communication — Can the driver understand spoken English questions and respond appropriately? Our AI asks questions similar to those an inspector would ask.
  • Part 2: Sign Recognition — Can the driver identify and explain common US road signs? We show actual signs and ask drivers to describe their meaning.

Why is it voice-based instead of multiple choice?

Because that's how the real roadside assessment works. An inspector doesn't hand your driver a quiz—they have a conversation. Multiple choice tests can be memorized or cheated. Voice-based assessment tests actual comprehension and communication ability.

Our system uses speech-to-text technology to transcribe responses, then AI grading to evaluate whether the driver understood and communicated in English.

What happens if a driver fails?

Results show up in your dashboard right away, broken down by question so you can see exactly where the driver struggled. From there you can:

  • Point the driver toward English training or study resources
  • Re-assess them once they've had time to improve

Reassessments are available from the Assessments page for any failed result (requires paid credits or a subscription).

Compliance & DOT Regulations

What is 49 CFR § 391.11(b)(2)?

This is the federal regulation that requires CMV drivers to be able to:

  • Read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public
  • Understand highway traffic signs and signals in English
  • Respond to official inquiries
  • Make entries on reports and records

Enforcement of this regulation increased significantly in June 2025, with inspectors actively testing drivers during roadside inspections.

Does passing ELPReady guarantee passing a DOT inspection?

No. Every inspector has their own approach, and drivers perform differently under real roadside stress. ELPReady flags drivers who are likely to struggle before an inspector finds out, and gives you documentation showing you've assessed your fleet's English proficiency.

How long should I keep assessment records?

Same as other driver qualification files: 3 years after the driver leaves your employment. ELPReady keeps your assessment data and certificates automatically, so you don't need to manage files yourself.
